Advocacy

Where a report of possible harm has been made, the adult at risk may require an advocate to support them through the adult protection process.

What is advocacy?

Independent advocacy is about speaking up for an individual or a group. It helps advocacy partners to have a stronger voice and as much control as possible over their own lives. Advocacy workers help to put forward their partner’s views and wishes, and provide information to support their partner’s decision-making.

In South Lanarkshire the contracted advocacy services are:

  • Equalsay

Equalsay provide advocacy for all adults in South Lanarkshire affected by:

• Learning disability

• Dementia

• Physical disability

• Mental ill health

• Long term conditions

 • Addictions

This is for all adults (16+) including older adults (65+)

Advocacy workers take instructions from their advocacy partners. The advocacy worker puts forward their partner’s wishes and not their own. Advocates can find out information for people, help explain how things work and support a person to make choices about how they get support or treatment. If you think an advocacy worker could help you or a family member, get in touch confidentially for an informal chat.
