Protection of vulnerable groups scheme

Prior to commencing employment it is important that people have appropriate criminal background checks completed. That way, we can try to avoid placing anyone with a known history of harmful or abusive behaviour into a position of trust.

The Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG membership scheme acts a safeguard for adults and came into force in February 2011 and replaces the previous Disclosure Scotland arrangements. The new scheme ends the need for multiple background checks when people work or volunteer with several organisations.

The PVG scheme is also introducing a list of those barred from working with adults and children. It ensures that information from the Police and Justice service can be acted upon promptly where there is an indication that someone may pose a risk to a child or an adult.
